Instruments

The BOPPS instrument payload will include the refurbished Stratospheric Terahertz Observatory (STO) telescope on board the gondola, and two instruments on separate optical benches.

The telescope will enable two instrument sensors – a UV/Vis sensor, managed by SwRI, and an IR sensor, managed by JHU/APL.  These two sensors will work side-by-side to gather critical information on the composition of comets.  The UV/Vis sensor will observe OH and CN emissions at 308 and 385 nanometer wavelengths, respectively, and the IR sensor will observe CO2 and H2O emissions at 4.3 and 2.7 micron wavelengths, respectively.
